Retaining Local Organizations

Providing Subsidies

SCROLL

Conservatorio provides full or partial rent subsidies to a number of local organizations and businesses. Vacant space within buildings in the development stage is often offered to local startups, small businesses, NGOs as well as community schools, daycares, and gyms. In one notable example, the ground floor of the redeveloped National Music Conservatory is provided free of charge to the music school Fundacion Danilo Perez. By offering space at below market rates, Conservatorio helps the community retain these local organizations and businesses that would otherwise be pushed out given the rising commercial rents in the neighborhood.

The space curation index (below) is a performance indicator created by Conservatorio to evaluate the costs associated with each social investment they make. The value represents a composite score (impact multiplied by the assigned weight). The impact is graded on a scale of 0 to 4, where 4 represents the highest positive impact and 0 means no contribution. The weights are derived from an internal survey to Conservatorio's employees and personal interviews with community members in Casco Viejo. The results of the their research became the basis for the assigned weights. Because Conservatorio employees and the community residents indicated that they values the built environment the most, it has a weight of 0.227. Culture and finance are weighted equally at 0.217, and social and human capital are valued at 0.185 and 0.154, respectively.
